Instructional Plan Week #5 - New Hope Center Unit

A. New Hope Center - Choosing the Best Unit

B. For this Instructional Plan that I created, I will be using the New Hope Center to come into and speak with the high school students on sexual education as a community resource for the unit. This unit covers a wide variety of standards from the KDE. It is a 10 day unit with a guest presenter for the first 8 days. The presenter will use a variety of materials such as a booklet, videos and student handouts and activities.

C. The students will be completing a workbook and several daily activities along with a daily video segment. Since it is an elective class with pertinent information, I feel the students should provide the information school wide. This will be accomplished by creating 8 fliers or pamphlets to be given to the student population or home rooms and hung in the hallways. This would ensure all students of the school the opportunity to access the information not only those involved with the class.

D. At the conclusion of the guest presentation the students will complete a multiple choice exam that confirms knowledge obtained by the KDE standards.
PL-H-PW-U-1
Students will understand that individuals have a responsibility to advocate for personal, family and community health.
PL-H-PW-U-4
Students will understand that decisions regarding sexuality have short and long term consequences and responsibilities.
PL-H-PW-U-7
Students will understand that behavioral choices affect physical, mental, emotional and social well-being and can have positive or negative consequences on one’s health.
PL-H-PW-U-8
Students will understand that positive health habits can help prevent injuries and spreading of diseases to self and others.
PL-H-PW-U-10
Students will understand that a variety of resources are available to inform, treat and counsel individuals with physical, mental, social and emotional health needs.

E. At the end of the unit I will use the multiple choice assessment and the flier/pamphlet to measure the success of the plan. If the students do well it with those two assessments it will be a success. However the ultimate measurement would come when the disease rate is lower along with unplanned pregnancy. That success rate will be determined ongoing.

  1. What a challenging topic. My children have participated in Educational Programs sponsored by New Hope that sparked much good conversation. I like how the students are creating the flier/pamphlet to educate the rest of the population. Students are curious and willing to learn more on this topic. It is good to be presented in a controlled environment where they will learn facts. I am grateful to teachers such as you willing to tackle this and take it to the next step. The book I am reading, Reading, Writing and Learning in the ESL Classroom would suggest some sheltered instruction for newcomers (new to our country). Vocabulary lessons that go over terms would be helpful before and during instruction.

  2. I have used the same program at our school, and New Hope does an amazing job. This plan involves community members and I really like your twist with the pamphlets handing out at school. Why not expand the learning circle outside your room with information that is valuabe to any grade level within a high school. They take a very challenging subject and teach it to high school kids effectively. I think your plan will work well. Thanks.
